In july 2013, RENATER improved its connection to LyonIX by upgrading its throughput to 10Gbs, meaning 10 times as much before, in order to favour exchange between Education/Research entities connected to the national network and Lyon Internet actors.
RENATER has been connected to LyonIX, the IXP operated by Rezopole, with 1Gbps. By upgrading to 10Gbps, RENATER wants to meet an ever increasing growth of Lyon traffic.
«RENATER always aims at optimizing Internet traffic in France, that is the reason why we develop our RENATERix offer nationwide. By upgrading its access link to LyonIX, RENATER optimises therefore bandwidth and exchange latency of Education/ research community in Lyon and Rhône Alpes region" states Laurent Gydé, RENATER technical Director.
Rezopole has set and operated many IXPs, meaning physical infrastructure enabling members to optimise and speed their Internet traffic. LyonIX, Lyon IXP, has two sites, situates at 10Kms distance for more security: the LyonIX 1 in North Villeurbane and LyonIX 2 located in South Venissieux agglomeration.
LyonIX has set equipments that can handle 10Gbps connection since 2012. Samuel Triolet Rezopole Director confirms : « The majority of LyonIX users begun with 100Mbps then upgraded to 1 Gbps. Now we assit to first 10Gbps upgrades, a proof of Lyon ever increasing traffic.
RENATER (National telecommunication network for Technology, Education and Research) was deployed at the early 90's in order to gather telecommunication infrastructure for Research and Education. The Public Interest Group RENATER was created in 1993 to achieve this aim.

Les Hospices Civils de Lyon (HCL) ont interconnecté leur réseau sur le nœud d'échange Internet LyonIX, afin de bénéficier d'un Internet Très Haut Débit. Cela améliore directement la connexion Internet et permet de développer les activités basées sur l'utilisation de l'Internet des HCL.
« L’arrivée des Hospices Civils de Lyon (CHU de Lyon) sur LyonIX représente pour nous un atout important car elle va permettre de rendre encore plus visibles les offres de services HCL de soins, de recherche et d’informatique (Hébergeur de données de santé, notre offre logicielle EASILY). Elle va nous permettre d’accéder à une plus large offre de services Télécom et Data ainsi que la mise en relation directe avec différents réseaux d’entités partenaires (Pompiers SDIS 69, Université, …) présents sur le GIX. Nous travaillons sur ce projet depuis plusieurs mois. L’équipe LyonIX/Rezopole, dont nous apprécions le professionnalisme, la disponibilité et l’enthousiasme nous a aidé à franchir toutes les étapes (Autonomous System, adresses internet IPV4 et IPV6) avec sérénité. » affirme François Scheidegger, Responsable Réseaux et Télécom des HCL.

Créée en 2001, Rezopole est devenu un des acteurs majeurs de la filière Internet et Réseau sur le territoire. Rezopole a mis en place et gère déjà plusieurs nœuds d'échange Internet (ou GIX) : à Lyon (LyonIX), à Saint-Étienne (SaintetIX), à Grenoble (GrenoblIX) et à Valence (ADN-IX).
Aujourd'hui, Rezopole compte plus de 70 acteurs interconnectés (opérateurs Télécom, FAI, Data Centers, acteurs publics et entreprises), 160 membres, 4 nœuds d'échange et 8 points de présence. LyonIX,le nœudd'échange de trafic Internet de Lyon, est répartit sur 2 sites géographiquement éloignés de plus de 10 kilomètres afin d'assurer une meilleure sécurité : LyonIX 1 au nord de Lyon à Villeurbanne et LyonIX 2 au sud de l'agglomération à Vénissieux.

L'interconnexion entre les GIX de Lyon et de Turin passe de 1G à 10G. Cette amélioration du service va permettre aux membres de LyonIX et TopIX de mieux gérer le trafic grandissant de leurs réseaux.
L'accès au très haut débit pour les acteurs économiques est désormais une nécessité. L'interconnexion entre LyonIX et TopIX, mise en place en 2008, a déjà facilité le trafic en peering local en suivant une nouvelle trajectoire, plus courte et plus rapide pour les membres des deux structures.
Les membres des GIX bénéficient, entre autres, d'une optimisation de la bande passante, de la latence et d'une baisse des coûts significative. Mais l'interconnexion a également engendré de multiples conséquences positives sur la région Rhône-Alpes et celle du Piémont. Elle apporte un rayonnement positif qui dynamise, non pas uniquement le secteur IT, mais toute une région. Cette liaison est en fait une infrastructure au même titre qu'une autoroute ou une voie ferrée.
"Nous upgradons par avance ce lien car nous avons pu observer que certains acteurs ne s'en servaient pas par crainte de saturation. En passant en 10 Gbs tous nos membres sont assurés que leur trafic s'écoulera à très haut débit et avec une très faible latence entre la France et l'Italie." affirme Samuel Triolet, Directeur de Rezopole.
"Les activités entre la France et l'Italie, en particulier Lyon et Turin s'accélèrent. Construction de la ligne de train grand vitesse mais aussi activation en très haut débit de certaines plaques comme la Maurienne qui étaient pour l'instant délaissées. Depuis 2008 et la première interconnexion inter-gIX et inter-pays entre LyonIX et TopIX, de nombreuses autres liaisons de ce type ont été mises en place et nous sommes fiers d'avoir été parmi les pionniers." France 3 a réalisé un reportage sur l'évolution de l'interconnexion des infrastructures Internet de Lyon et Turin : LyonIX et TopIX. Le Data Center Alliance Réseaux situé dans la Vallée de la Mauriènne, qui rejoint TopIX via une fibre optique traversant le tunnel du Frejus, sera également connecté aux réseaux de Chambery et Lyon. L'objectif est de créer de la valeur et aider les entreprises locales à bénéficier d'un réel Très Haut Débit.

The Syndicat Intercommunal du Canton de Modane (Modane intercommunal syndicate) organizes on Thursday, November 29, a presentation of opportunities offered by very high speed Internet directly connected to the larger Internet companies (Google, Amazon, OVH, etc.) in the presence of local authorities and actors and Italian authorities.
This action reflects very high speed Internet generalisation across the Maurienne valley and competitiveness creation for local companies.
The SCIM (Syndicat Intercommunal du Canton de Modane) with the SFTRF help and its Italian counterpart SITAF, have developed an optic fiber link between very high speed networks of Susa and the Forum Alpium in Modane. A 1-gigabit rate is available to French users thanks to a partnership with TOP-IX, supported by the Piedmont region, which operates Turin exchange point.
Top-IX is also interconnected with LyonIX exchange point, operated by Rezopole Association in order to improve Lyon-Turin Internet traffic for both regions.
