Auvergne : HSBB acceleration

In 2013, the initial public-private partnership contract for the installation of Very High Speed Internet in Auvergne was recently renegotiated. The departments of Puy-de-Dôme, Cantal and Allier voted for this renegotiation. The President of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, Laurent Wauquiez, has therefore signed a new agreement with Orange to ensure the development of the HSBB in the region.


Indeed, the digital coverage of the territory will gain 3 years. By 2022, 436,000 plugs will be deployed, 120,000 more than under the previous contract. Thus 84% of Auvergne will be eligible for fibre within two years.
This will allow the Region and the various local authorities to save 137 million euros on the deployment of optical fibre. Overall, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region has invested 180 million euros in this project, which represents 50% of the public-private partnership.

The Rezopole technical team will meet you on Friday 24 May from 9am to 12pm at the Hôtel de Région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.

This 20th edition will focus on the interests of network automation and the issues associated with its implementation. Feedback on the automated deployment of the configurations implemented on LyonIX in recent months will also be provided.

Evolution of IXP architectures

Internet exchange points play a key role in the Internet ecosystem. Today, there are more than 400 of them in more than 100 countries around the world. IXPs offer a neutral and shared switch fabric where customers can exchange traffic with each other.
Simply put, an Internet exchange point can be considered a large level 2 (L2) switch. Each client network connected to the IXP connects one or more of its routers to this switch via Ethernet interfaces. Routers on different networks can establish peering sessions by exchanging routing information via BGP and then sending traffic via the Ethernet switch.
IXPs allow operators to locally interconnect one or more customer networks through their level 2 networks. This leads to a more resilient Internet, improves bandwidth usage and reduces the cost and latency of interconnections. To avoid the tedious implementation of bilateral peering sessions, most IXPs nowadays use route servers. This simplifies peering by allowing IXP clients to peer with other networks via a single BGP session to a route server.

Whereas in the early 1990s, IXPs were based on FDDI or ATM, today the standard interconnectivity service is based on Ethernet. However, the level 2 switch fabric of an IXP is also evolving, moving from simple Ethernet switches on a single site connected via a standard local area network to IP/MPLS protocol switches distributed over several sites requiring WAN connectivity over optical fibre.
As a result, with more locations and increasing bandwidth, the connectivity network becomes more efficient, flexible and scalable. It is therefore an important strategic asset for IXP operators.
It should be noted that although switch fabrics based on IP/MPLS are mainly used today, there are other approaches such as VXLAN. These methods, which do not change the basic topology of the architecture, may be deployed more often in the future.
It should also be mentioned that to improve the resilience of the IXP infrastructure, PXCs are increasingly being used between the client and PE routers. In the event of a failure or scheduled maintenance, the PXC can switch from the client router to a backup PE router.

Innovation is accelerated with disintegration, SDN, NFV and network automation. Indeed, these new technologies are increasingly being used in telecommunications networks and IXPs. However, as IXP networks are generally more localized with older infrastructure and services than telecommunications networks, they may be the ideal place to introduce new network concepts.
Optical media is making progress inspired by the automation and openness of network technologies and offers innovative, ultra-dense and efficient systems. Many IXPs deploy these technologies to increase capacity while reducing costs, ground space and power consumption.
The disintegration of routers is also widespread in DC. Instead of using routers based on bulky chassis, SDN-controlled, white label L2/L3 switches using more scalable leaf-spine technologies are preferred. The use of white labels with a configurable and hardware-independent NOS provides greater flexibility and allows IXP operators to select only the features they really need.

This new member offers multiple web hosting solutions, collaborative storage tools, synchronization and supervision. And it is also a secure room for housing your IT solutions. Internet: the cable battle

The dependence on digital and its infrastructures is increasing every day. To ensure their independence, the majors of the sector therefore invest in the network (Internet). Sophy Caulier reveals, in an article in Le Monde Économie on June 24, the battle that is being played out between the various players on this gigantic network.

Composed of three main elements: data centres, networks and interconnection points, the Internet is indeed a physical network. The cumulative length of the submarine cables is thirty times around the Earth, or 1.2 million kilometres. However, even though this infrastructure was built to be resilient, it is on the verge of overdose. For information, Netflix occupied one third of the bandwidth in the United States during peak hours in 2016. Another example: in 2018, companies are increasingly storing their data on the cloud with more than 20% growth for the French market. But the risk of overloading the network does not really worry.

The main threat is actually the breakage of submarine or land cables that can cause an Internet outage for several days. This was the case at the beginning of the year in about ten countries on the west coast of Africa. The infrastructure therefore remains fragile despite the redundancy of cables. Companies like OVH, InterCloud or Colt choose to build their own network to protect themselves but also to reduce costs and guarantee quality services to their customers.

GAFAM, which has had data centres for a long time, is also investing heavily in cables. "They deploy their own cables to interconnect their data centers on all continents without going through telecom operators. The challenge for these actors is to set the costs. In other words, they'd rather own than rent! "says Jean-Luc Lemmens, director of Idate DigiWorld's Media-Telecom division.

But when it comes to developing countries or certain geographical areas too far from cables, Internet giants deploy networks via satellites, UAVs or balloons. Amazon, Facebook, Virgin or SoftBank also have great satellite ambitions. Nothing seems to be able to stop the almighty GAFAM in their race to control the armature of the Net.

This new point of presence (POP) located in Limonest is connected to LyonIX 1 and 2 across a 10Gbps cross-connection.

The local loop between the three LyonIX POPs will improve the network security.

Such as L1 and L2, Lyonix 3 is equiped with a 10Gbps switch, Serialhub, remote reboot and allows members to host their equipment
