India leads in IPv6 deployment

Most countries started their migration to the new IPv6 protocol several months ago. This transition is essential to cope with the IPv4 address shortage that has been predicted for many years. The most recent ranking showing the IPv6 adoption rate by Google users puts India in the lead with 61.67%. Malaysia and French Guiana are second and third respectively.

France is in fourth place with 48.38% followed by Taiwan with an adoption rate of 48.0%. The United States has an adoption rate of 47.5%. Canada ranks only 20th with an adoption rate of 36.59% and the UK ranks 24th with 33.27%.

 

IP (Internet Protocol) addresses are a kind of license plate that allow Internet users to surf the web. Without these IP addresses, we would not be able to access the web. Each time we open an account, an Internet box for our home, or a subscription for a mobile phone, we are assigned a unique IP address. The IPv4 protocol is reaching saturation point.

Existing since 1983, this protocol is limited to 4.3 billion IP addresses worldwide, including 83 million for France. At the end of June 2020, French telecommunication operators had already allocated nearly 95% of IPv4 addresses. This is why a switch to IPv6 was necessary. IPv6 is also considered to be much more secure, faster and more powerful than its predecessor. Above all, this protocol offers many more IP addresses.

RIPE opposes the "New IP" plan

RIPE opposes the

RIPE, Europe's Internet governance body, opposes a proposal to reshape basic Internet protocols supported by the Chinese government, Chinese telecommunications companies and network equipment provider Huawei.

The proposal, called "New IP", is a reworked version of the TCP/IP standards to support new technologies. It includes a "shutdown protocol" to shut down faulty parts of the Internet and a new governance model that centralizes the Internet and puts it in the hands of a few critical node operators.

 

Submitted last year to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and published last month by the Financial Times, the new proposal immediately drew criticism. To the general public and privacy advocates, it is an obvious attempt to hide Internet censorship features behind a technical overhaul of the TCP/IP protocol stack.

In short, an attempt by the Chinese government to export and impose its autocratic views on the rest of the Internet and its infrastructure. Especially since several countries such as Iran, Russia and Saudi Arabia have given their support.

 

On its blog, the Regional Internet Registry for Europe, West Asia and the former USSR, RIPE NCC, has officially spoken out against China's new IP proposal.

Marco Hogewoning, acting director of public policy and Internet governance at RIPE NCC, says "Do we need New IP? I don't think we do. [...] Although there are some technical challenges with the current Internet model, I don't think we need a new architecture to solve them."

Any attempt to overhaul Internet protocols should be left to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and not the ITU, where political influence is more important than technically sound arguments, he said. RIPE is also concerned about the desire to change the decentralized nature of the Internet.

 

The organization expressed its concerns in a paper sent to the ITU in February this year: "RIPE NCC is deeply concerned about what has been proposed here.[...] We are particularly concerned that this proposal represents an opportunity to move away from the traditional 'bottom-up' decision-making model. We also believe that the technical justification presented is flawed and find the alternative designs suggested to be both unrealistic and unproven".

 

With the new proposal due to enter the test phase in 2021, Hogewoning urges national Internet governance organizations to contact local decision-makers and recommend voting against it as well as a vote at a later date.

Evolution of IXP architectures

Internet exchange points play a key role in the Internet ecosystem. Today, there are more than 400 of them in more than 100 countries around the world. IXPs offer a neutral and shared switch fabric where customers can exchange traffic with each other.
Simply put, an Internet exchange point can be considered a large level 2 (L2) switch. Each client network connected to the IXP connects one or more of its routers to this switch via Ethernet interfaces. Routers on different networks can establish peering sessions by exchanging routing information via BGP and then sending traffic via the Ethernet switch.
IXPs allow operators to locally interconnect one or more customer networks through their level 2 networks. This leads to a more resilient Internet, improves bandwidth usage and reduces the cost and latency of interconnections. To avoid the tedious implementation of bilateral peering sessions, most IXPs nowadays use route servers. This simplifies peering by allowing IXP clients to peer with other networks via a single BGP session to a route server.

Whereas in the early 1990s, IXPs were based on FDDI or ATM, today the standard interconnectivity service is based on Ethernet. However, the level 2 switch fabric of an IXP is also evolving, moving from simple Ethernet switches on a single site connected via a standard local area network to IP/MPLS protocol switches distributed over several sites requiring WAN connectivity over optical fibre.
As a result, with more locations and increasing bandwidth, the connectivity network becomes more efficient, flexible and scalable. It is therefore an important strategic asset for IXP operators.
It should be noted that although switch fabrics based on IP/MPLS are mainly used today, there are other approaches such as VXLAN. These methods, which do not change the basic topology of the architecture, may be deployed more often in the future.
It should also be mentioned that to improve the resilience of the IXP infrastructure, PXCs are increasingly being used between the client and PE routers. In the event of a failure or scheduled maintenance, the PXC can switch from the client router to a backup PE router.

Innovation is accelerated with disintegration, SDN, NFV and network automation. Indeed, these new technologies are increasingly being used in telecommunications networks and IXPs. However, as IXP networks are generally more localized with older infrastructure and services than telecommunications networks, they may be the ideal place to introduce new network concepts.
Optical media is making progress inspired by the automation and openness of network technologies and offers innovative, ultra-dense and efficient systems. Many IXPs deploy these technologies to increase capacity while reducing costs, ground space and power consumption.
The disintegration of routers is also widespread in DC. Instead of using routers based on bulky chassis, SDN-controlled, white label L2/L3 switches using more scalable leaf-spine technologies are preferred. The use of white labels with a configurable and hardware-independent NOS provides greater flexibility and allows IXP operators to select only the features they really need.

New service: Mapping IP towards AS

Rezopole sets up a publication service of correspondence between IP and AS. A simple DNS request allows to find the AS and the subnet in which the IP is published!

 

This new public service is an alternative to the American team-cymru and allows to expose BGP routes seen from Europe. Visit www.rezopole.net/mapping-ip-as to enrich your network scripts! These tools (dig and asdig) are reverted to the public domain on our github! An update is coming…

When the manufacturers play the game!

The technical team of Rezopole starts a phase of 100Gb equipment tests.

 

As a first step, this switching equipment will be connected to the edge of the current Fabric Ethernet and in the future will become the new heart of the LyonIX networks.

 

During the test phase, their actual capabilities in terms of bitrate will be tested as well as the interoperability of the various manufacturers' Fabric IP solutions.


Many thanks to Cisco for the loan of a Nexus 9000, Alyséo for the loan of an EdgeCore 7712-32X, Brocade for the loan of a SLX 9240 and Huawei for the loan of a C8860-CE!!
