Bouygues Telecom launches its own sovereign cloud

Bouygues Telecom launches its own sovereign cloud

Bouygues Telecom Entreprises OnCloud is a new independent structure that benefits from its own infrastructure and Nerim's decade of experience, specialising in hosting and cloud computing.

"For the past two years, dozens of employees have been designing new infrastructures and offers based on our customers' real needs. What Bouygues Telecom Entreprises OnCloud offers today is unique on the market, both in terms of the quality of the advice it provides and its technical and commercial agility," explains François Treuil, Director of Bouygues Telecom Entreprises.

Bouygues Telecom Entreprises OnCloud is an operator, integrator and host all rolled into one and aims to establish itself as a pure player in the cloud. Its ambition is to be rapidly recognised as a trusted cloud, according to the new name given by the French government as part of the National Cloud Strategy. However, this recognition requires SecNumCloud certification issued by the ANSSI. This is a complex, restrictive and costly process that will take several months, if not years.

A new player that wants to reach out to a wide range of customers, including SMEs and SMIs, public authorities and large groups. The operator wants to offer public IaaS cloud services as well as help companies build their own private clouds.

However, the field is already crowded with American hyperscalers (AWS, Azure, GCP, OCI, IBM Cloud, etc.), small local hosting companies and OVHcloud and 3DS Outscale, which are already SecNumCloud certified. Not forgetting Scaleway and the still nascent Bleu (the result of a joint venture between Capgemini and Orange). And not to mention the Gaia-X initiative, which should also enable other European operators to establish themselves more strongly in France. The competition is going to be tough...

Full-scale test within the framework of 5GMED

on Thursday, 30 July 2020 Posted in Archives Rezopole

Full-scale test within the framework of 5GMED

The 5GMED project, led by the European Commission in the framework of the H2020 programme, should provide a model of sustainable 5G deployment for future mobility on the Mediterranean corridor between France and Spain.

The services tested rely on a wide range of technologies in addition to 5G, such as cloud/edge computing and artificial intelligence, to provide advanced connectivity services on transport routes.

Through 4 pilot projects on the railway line and motorway between Figueras and Perpignan, 5GMed will develop cross-border 5G application scenarios, advanced services for connected and automated cooperative mobility (CCAM) and future rail mobile communication systems (FRMCS).

With a budget of €16 million, 75% financed by the European Commission, the project will be launched in September 2020 for completion by November 2023.

The infrastructure will thus enable four use cases: remote automated driving, advanced traffic management, continuity of commercial rail services at border crossings and infotainment with augmented reality for autonomous vehicles and rail.

Initially tested on three small-scale sites, the final integration and validation of the use cases will then be carried out on the cross-border section between Figueras and Perpignan.

Led by Cellnex Telecom, the consortium brings together 21 members from 7 countries representing the telecommunications sector, the transport and mobility sector, technology and solution providers, consulting service providers, research institutions and organisations in favour of mobile and digital transformation.

The Mediterranean Corridor is an essential axis for the competitiveness of the companies and territories of the great European south-west. It is also a strategic corridor for France which is of interest for freight traffic to Northern Europe, Spain, Italy and Central Europe. This route will also contribute to the new Silk Road rail link between Europe and China.

4A page is turning for the French sovereign cloud

4A page is turning for the French sovereign cloud

The Cloudwatt, Orange's online data hosting service, will be disconnected on February 1st. Launched in 2012, it was one of the two heads of the French-style sovereign cloud co-financed at a loss by public money. With Bercy calling again for the creation of secure data centers to host sensitive government and corporate data, this failure could serve as a lesson.

At the origin of this project, called Andromeda, France wanted to invest 150 million euros in a shared server service that could reduce the costs of ministries and companies. But here we are, the French technology groups called upon to help did not succeed in reaching an agreement and therefore shared the envelope.

On the one hand, Cloudwatt was created by Orange and Thales by adding 150 million euros to the amount provided by the State. On the other hand, Numergy was launched by SFR and Bull with the same investment. However, none of them were able to find customers. And two years after their launch, Cloudwatt claimed only 2 million dollars in revenue. Even if Numergy was doing better with 6 million billed, these are crumbs compared to Amazon, Microsoft and IBM.

Bercy stops the expenses, a few months later, by assuring that she has spent only half of the promised sums. Orange and SFR then bought back the shares of the State, one from Thales and the other from Bull. Numergy and Cloudwatt, which had then become simple brands, had since been part of the offers designed for large companies by the two telecoms operators.

Today, the dominance of American players in the online IT market continues to raise concerns about the integrity of critical data. A recent report by MP Raphaël Gauvain criticizes the Cloud Act, an American extraterritorial law recalling the Patriot Act and spy programs.

The Government should therefore sign a strategic supply chain contract to develop a "Cloud of Trust" ecosystem in the fall. Being French will not be enough to be French and some American or Chinese technologies used in French data centers will be difficult to support.

"This time, we will not assume the nationality of the actors but their ability to guarantee data integrity with regard to our laws and strategic autonomy over our essential infrastructures and data," notes Jean-Noël de Galzain, Hexatrust's president on the sector's strategic committee. In addition, the State should commit itself to playing its role as a buyer.

DC under the influence of the Cloud

DC under the influence of the Cloud

Published by Axians, the DataCenter 2018-2021 study, Which evolutions for your IT infrastructures, indicates that data centres will be managed mainly in a private cloud mode by 2021. More than half will need to integrate a data management model based on a hybrid cloud model.

When asked in 2018, nearly 80% of CIOs say they mainly manage On Premise infrastructures and nearly one-third manage private cloud infrastructures. By 2021, this trend will intensify as, contrary to popular belief, internal data centres will not disappear. Indeed, it is the technologies implemented that will evolve and allow these data centers to operate in Cloud mode.

Although more than half of companies are aware of the need to manage data in a public-private cloud mode, only 12% of respondents have a project to implement a hybrid cloud solution.

According to this study, the 4 main current challenges for IT Departments are security (73%), cost control (66%), regulatory compliance (60%) and the digitalization of business lines (52%). The technology that will have the greatest impact on data centers within three years will be cybersecurity in the face of business service automation. On the software side, VMware leads ahead of Microsoft and Red Hat. While on the cloud operators side, Microsoft is cited first ahead of OVH and AWS.

For the majority of the CIOs interviewed, they remain the technical and operational guarantors of the infrastructure or strategy and innovation. However, new roles are emerging such as private cloud resource providers driven by SLA or hybrid cloud operators.

Increase in expenses dedicated to DataCenters

on Wednesday, 17 April 2019 Posted in Archives Rezopole, Archives GrenoblIX, Archives LyonIX

Increase in expenses dedicated to DataCenters

Driven by a booming cloud infrastructure market, hardware and software spending in DataCenters increased by 17% in 2018. A global market dominated by Dell EMC followed by Cisco, Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Huawei. Investments driven by a "growing demand" for public cloud services and the need for "ever richer" configuration according to Synergy Research Group, which publishes these figures. As a result, the average selling price of enterprise servers has skyrocketed.

In more detail, spending on infrastructure purchases for the public cloud increased by 30% compared to 13% for those directed at equipping enterprise data centers. "Cloud services revenues continue to grow by nearly 50% per year," said John Dinsdale, analyst at Synregy Research Group. "SaaS and e-commerce revenues are each increasing by about 30%. All these factors contribute to a significant increase in spending on public cloud infrastructure," he adds.
The public cloud market is dominated by the MDGs, which account for the largest share of cumulative revenue. On the brand side, Dell EMC is ahead of Cisco, HPE and Huawei. Dell EMC is also a leader in the private cloud market, followed by Microsoft, HPE and Cisco. These four providers are the leaders in the non-Cloud Data Center market, but in a different order.

Total revenue from Data Center equipment, including both cloud and non-cloud hardware and software, is $150 billion in 2018, the analyst said. The Data Center infrastructure market is 96% composed of servers, operating systems, storage, networking and software. Network security and management software represent the rest.
By segment, Dell EMC leads in terms of server and storage revenue. Cisco, on the other hand, overlooks the network segment. Then there are Microsoft, HPE, VMware, Lenovo, Inspur, NetApp and Huawei, which recorded the strongest growth in one year.

"We are also seeing relatively strong growth in infrastructure spending in enterprise data centers, with more complex workloads, hybrid cloud requirements, increased server functionality and higher component costs being the main drivers," concludes Dinsdale.

Iliad takes control of Jaguar Network

Iliad takes control of Jaguar Network

Announced on January 18th by Free's parent company, the acquisition of 75% of the capital of the French company Jaguar Network will enable the operator to strengthen its offers on the B2B market. These shares, previously held by the Naxicap investment fund, were sold for just under €100 million.

"This transaction is an important step for Iliad in its development strategy to address the corporate market by leveraging the very strong expertise and complementarities between the two groups and by partnering with a recognized entrepreneur," said Free's management after the acquisition.

This takeover should enable Iliad to develop its national network of data centers in order to increase its capacity to provide technical support to companies. However, this operation should not change the organization chart of the operator and host Cloud Jaguar Network since the company remains managed by its founder, Kevin Polizzi, who remains a shareholder with 25% of the capital.
