LyonIX is interconnected with LILLIX!

on Thursday, 08 September 2016 Posted in Archives Rezopole, Archives LyonIX

LyonIX is interconnected with LILLIX!

LyonIX, the Lyon IXP + NAP platform, and LILLIX, the French northern GIX, are now interconnected for the greater benefit of their members.

What am I supposed to do with this interconnection ?

The prefixes of the LILLIX members are now visible by the LyonIX members, and conversely, allowing the implementation of optimized peering connections between the two IXP passing by the LyonIX and LILLIX common network infrastructure.

What am I supposed to do to take advantage of it ?

Nothing, the news are automatically published by LyonIX and LILLIX route-servers.

Who are LILLIX members?

See the list on the LILLIX site.

For any other technical question concerning the Rezopole/LyonIX services, contact the Technical Service.

IXP: Critical interconnection point in 2019?

on Thursday, 05 November 2015 Posted in Archives Rezopole, Archives GrenoblIX, Archives LyonIX, Archives EuroGIX

IXP: Critical interconnection point in 2019?

According to Cisco, the annual IP datacenter traffic will globally reach 10.4 Zb in 2019, including 8.6 Zb generated by the only Cloud services.

According to Global Cloud Index of Cisco, the datacenter traffic should globally triple between 2014 and 2019. It would pass from 3.4 Zb in 2014 to 10.4 Zb in 2019. And the traffic generated by the Cloud services should quadruple over the period, passing from 2.1 Zb to 8.6 Zb per year. So, the Cloud services would represent 83 % of the datacenter traffic in 2019.

Is It Really Worth Peering at IXPs?

on Friday, 09 October 2015 Posted in Archives Rezopole, Archives GrenoblIX, Archives LyonIX, Archives EuroGIX

Is It Really Worth Peering at IXPs?

Roberto di Lallo, Italian computer scientist at Roma Tre University, made a research on the importance of IXPs, Internet eXchange Points and their effects on the latency of networks. IXPs are infrastructures used by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to exchange traffic between their Autonomous Systems (ASes). An IXP allows ISPs to interconnect their ASes directly, i.e. to establish peerings between them, rather than through third-party networks (upstreams). IXPs play a crucial role in the development of the Internet, encouraging ISPs to create a dense network of interconnections at low cost. Some of them have a throughput of many Tbit/sec and are some of the most important building blocks of today’s Internet.

Internet exchange points (IXPs) are infrastructures allowing the ISPs to exchange the traffic between their networks without passing by a third-party network. The historic and technical importance of the IXPs, in terms of network densification, performance and cost reduction, was recently questioned by certain number of major ISPs having decided to leave (de-peering) the IXPs under the pretext of better IP traffic management and improvement in the QoS.

A study conducted by Roberto di Lallo aims to prove that the benefits induced by the IXPs are real in terms of performance and network security. This consisted in using about 150 RIPE probes in Italy and comparing trafic performance passing through two main Italian IXPs, MIX and NaMex, or through third-party network besides IXPs, towards 50 sites considered to be critical (bank, insurance, administration), and the 100 most visited sites in Italy. It was made possible thanks to the collaboration of small local ISPs which left the control of their BGP announcements to Di Lallo's team.

L'Internet Society lance l'IXP Toolkit

The Internet Society has launched a news information and collaboration portal for Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) (http://www.ixptoolkit.org/) and a collaboration IXP Toolkit Report .

The IXP Toolkit Portal (web site) provides resources, data, maps and statistics for the IXP community. The site has also an agenda with international internet events and a blog with industry news.

The IXP Toolkit Report (http://www.internetsociety.org/ixptoolkitguide) is a resource for new IXPs and developing IXPs.  The Internet Society is asking for "feedback" on the Report and Portal.  Please send any updates or improvements on the IXP Toolkit Report to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by 15 April.  They will be releasing v.1.0 of the IXP Toolkit Report on May 1.  Please send any suggestions and feedback on the IXP Toolkit Portal (web site) to This email address is being protected from spambots. Rezopole met en place une sonde border 6

on Wednesday, 08 January 2014 Posted in Archives Rezopole, Archives GrenoblIX, Archives LyonIX, Archives SaintetIX, Archives ADN-IX

Rezopole met en place une sonde border 6

In addition to its IXP activities, Rezopole also established many services for the Internet community. Some examples: a FTP server, a conferencing service, a files sharing service ... To ensure the best quality of service, Rezopole implemented the border 6 solution Non Stop Internet to optimize its BGP routes. The border 6 probe can promote certain routes to make them faster and more reliable.

The solution performs tests on the entire network, thereby generating an evaluation of performance and connectivity. The data collected is used to optimize the BGP routing based on delay and packet loss to the test destinations or those most used. Meanwhile, reports are edited on the routing decisions and improvements made, allowing teams to detect failures and lack of performance.

This system improves the quality of hosted services on Rezopole servers using criteria not included in BGP.

Nouvelle méthode de filtrage sur les Route Serveurs : RPKI + ROA

on Wednesday, 09 October 2013 Posted in Archives GrenoblIX, Archives LyonIX, Archives SaintetIX, Archives ADN-IX

Rezopole has set up an alternative filtering method of its members BGP route advertisements on its Route Servers : RPKI + ROA.

This method enables to check that BGP advertisements of interconnected members are correct and that the given prefix matches the AS that sent it.

Filtering on the RIPE data base

“Before using the RPKI + ROA method, we were only filtering using the RIPE objects from the RIPE data base. Thanks to the two implemented methods we can now do a thorough check of routes that we communicate to our members on our main Cisco Route Server” states Arnaud Fenioux, Technical Manager at Rezopole.
