The software
Launched in July 2004 by Steve Coast, OpenStreet Map is an online collaborative tool that lets you create and provide free geographic data right. The aim is to circumvent the legal or technical restrictions on other maps to use them in a free creative, productive or innovative, and, legal way. The contribution of each has developed maps adapted to the characteristics and cities depending on the means of transport. Thus we find maps for cyclists, for motorists, hikers or nautical charts.
OpenStreetMap offers two main types of tools under a free and cross-platform license:
Rendering software that can draw the main map.
Editing software to edit existing maps.
- Potlatch, online editor coded in Flash
- OSM, independent Java application that can manage many types of data
- Maperitive, formerly known as Kosmos
- Merkaartor, multi-plateform map editor
